CityTour 2012

CityTour 2012This year's CityTour dates are Wednesday, September 5 through Sunday, September 9 and will take us to Las Vegas and Brian Head.

One of the main reasons for choosing to visit Las Vegas is to meet with the people at Zappos.com. This on-line retailer of shoes and clothing started in the early 2000's. The 38 year old founder, Tony Hsieh, has committed his company to reinventing downtown Las Vegas. He purchased the old Las Vegas City Hall and is in the process of renovating it and moving his corporate headquarters to downtown Las Vegas (probably 1500+ people). In addition, Zappos is developing the Downtown Program, a multifaceted initiative to bring entrepreneurial vitality and redevelopment to downtown Las Vegas.

If you have questions, please call Myles Rademan, 435-901-8778. To register, contact ReNae Rezac.

Emergency Preparedness

Tunnel ClosedBe Informed
Emergency preparedness is not the sole concern of Californians for earthquakes, those who live in "Tornado Alley"; or Gulf Coast residents because of hurricanes.  Most communities may be impacted by several types of hazards during a lifetime.  Americans also travel more than ever before; to areas impacted by hazards they may not be at risk of near their homes.  Knowing what to do before, during and after an emergency is a critical part of being prepared and may make all the difference when seconds count.

Plan For Your Risks
There are actions that should be taken before, during and after an event that are unique to each hazard.  Identify the hazards that have happened or could happen in your area and plan for the unique actions for each.  Local emergency management offices can help identify the hazards in your area and outline the local plans and recommendation for each.  Share the hazard-specific information with family members and include pertinent materials in your family disaster plan.

Earthquake Exhibit at the Park City Library
According to the Utah Seismic Safety Commission, 90% of Utah's population lives in active earthquake zones.  An exhibit developed by the Earthquake Education Services at the University of Utah Seismograph Stations is available for viewing at the Park City Library August 13-August 27.

In July, City Council . . .

  • Appointed Vai Lealaitafea as a Police Sergeant
  • Appointed Alisha Niswander, Michael Barille, and Kathy Kahn to the Recreation Advisory Board
  • Appointed Diane Foster as Acting City Manager
  • Appointed Bob Kollar, Bryan Markkanen, Vicky Anderson, and Judy Horwitz to the Public Art Advisory Board
  • Awarded a contract to Lyndon Jones Construction for the Wyatt Earp Storm drain improvements
  • Appointed Nann Worel, Adam Strachan, and Stewart Gross to the Planning Commission

Green Your Routine

Ceiling fans are efficient and use little electricity, less than 1/10th the wattage of air conditioners. Cost to run is approximately $1.50 per month vs. $20 per month for air conditioners. Ceiling fans can also be used with the air conditioner. The thermostat can be set 9 degrees F higher, for the same resulting temperature. This represents a savings of 30% of air conditioning costs and energy consumption. Make sure your ceiling fan is turned for 'summer' -- you should feel the air blown downward.

Leadership Class XVIII Community Service Project
Each year, the current Leadership Park City Class chooses a community project. This year’s Leadership Park City Class XVIII discovered an opportunity to provide a single source of information for the many free and low cost services available to the Park City Latino community. As a result, the class produced a brochure called the “L.O.C.A.L.” brochure (List of Community Agencies for Latinos). View the Spanish or English version of the brochure. To receive copies of the brochure, please contact Sharon Ottoson, 435-513-9275. Many thanks to Leadership Park City, Class XVIII, for their hard work.
