Park City Honors 1,000,000th Transit Riders of 2007
In a brief but memorable Transit Center ceremony, Bob Oglesby and his 13 year old son Matthew, visiting Park City on Spring Break from Nashville, Tennessee, were honored as the 1,000,000th, or to be more accurate, the 1,000,000th and 1,000,001 riders of 2007 on Park City’s free bus system.
This occurred three days earlier than in 2006, and weeks earlier than in 2005, attesting to the growing popularity of Park City’s free buses. Bob and Matthew both commented on how much fun they are having in Park City and how easy and convenient getting around on the free buses is.
Shortly after the Oglesby’s received their certificate of honor from Mayor Dana Williams, and a complementary dinner voucher at a Main Street Restaurant from Councilman and former bus driver, Roger Harlan, the Park City Transit System was given a $1,130,246 check by the Federal Transportation Administration and the Utah Department of Transportation to help defray yearly operating expenses.
Park City in conjunction with Summit County operates the 2nd largest public transit system in the State of Utah, which last year carried just shy of 1.9 million passengers.
The 25 year old free transit system helps reduce reliance on automobiles and lessens the community’s carbon footprint. It is free to passengers, and paid for by a variety of local taxes and state and federal grants.
PARK CITY MOVES CLOSER TO SECURING LONG-TERM WATER
Over 10 years of negotiations resulting in a set of cooperative water delivery agreements between Park City, Summit County, Mountain Regional Water Special Service District, and the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District to supply 5000 acre feet of water to Park City and the Snyderville Basin were approved Thursday night by the Park City Council. Summit County will consider final approval at their next County Commission meeting.
Federal and other funding sources are being sought to help construct the necessary pipeline and infrastructure. These projects anticipate water delivery to Park City through an Expanded Lost Creek Canyon Project from a point starting near the Promontory Ranch development off of U.S. 40.
Park City’s Public Works Director Jerry Gibbs feels that this agreement insures sufficient water for anticipated area growth for the next 40 years.
City Manager Tom Bakaly stressed “this agreement is another successful example of regional collaboration between Park City and Summit County piggybacking on previous cooperative efforts on transit, planning, recreation and mosquito abatement”.
Summit County Commissioner Bob Richer sees this interlocal water agreement as “one of the capstones of my public career”, while Mayor Dana Williams calls the agreement “a monumental milestone in cooperation, a real win-win for our future.”
