LEADERSHIP PARK CITY HONORED WITH BEST OF STATE MEDAL

Leadership Park City has been honored with the 2009 Best of State medal. In a black-tie award ceremony, Leadership Park City received the prestigious acknowledgement in the category of Community Development, Education/Advocacy Organization.
The Best of State Awards recognize outstanding individuals, organizations and businesses in Utah, highlighting entities that inspire excellence in communities and serve to better the quality of life in the state. Award candidates are evaluated individually and independently by more than 100 judges, who evaluate nominees in three areas: superior results and excellence in the field of endeavor, innovation or creativity in approaches used, and contribution to improving the quality of life in Utah.
Leadership Park City, now in its 15th year, was created to identify, encourage and train new or emerging community-based leaders; people who dedicate themselves to accomplishing worthwhile community goals with a sense of vision, purpose, excitement and common good. The program addresses the development challenges facing the Park City and Summit County community; encourages stewardship, civic involvement and community service; teaches personal and organizational leadership skills; and exposes participants to local and state governmental process, community organizations, and support networks.
From over 100 applicants annually, 30 students are selected to participate in this national award-winning program, which includes lectures, group discussions, field trips and experiential "hands on" learning. During the program year, sessions include addressing public and governmental process, state and regional leadership, current community issues, diversity awareness, leadership ethics, communication and team-building, regional growth and change, community-building and involvement. Students also participate in a five-day “City Tour,” in which they join Summit County leaders traveling to communities in the West to learn what kinds of challenges these communities have faced, how they have addressed them, and what suggestions they have for community development. Leadership Park City class members are also required to envision, plan and bring to fruition a class service project that will benefit the Summit County community in some way.
Participants in the Leadership Park City program come from virtually every segment of the community. The program has served as a model and launching point for community activism, with alumni serving in community servant capacities throughout the Summit County region. Graduates include Park City's current mayor, several current elected City Council and County Council members, and planning commissioners. Program alumni either lead or sit on boards for virtually every commission, work group, committee, service group and non-profit organization in the region. Leadership Park City is co-directed by Lisa Cilva Ward and Myles Rademan, who have personally mentored over 400 program graduates in leadership, volunteerism, and civic engagement. Co-director Ward has a background in organizational communication and development, leadership and group facilitation, and has over 12 years’ experience facilitating adult and youth leadership programs. She is the recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award (2000) and the prestigious Preceptor Award (2009) from the international Community Leadership Association (CLA). Rademan founded the Leadership Park City program 15 years ago and continues to serve prominently as co-director. With a background in law and urban planning as well as his experience as a Fulbright Scholar, Kellogg National Fellow, and Salzburg Fellow, Rademan’s professional experience includes his most recent role as Director of Public Affairs and Communications for Park City. Rademan has also been honored with CLA’s prestigious Preceptor Award (2001).
