Park City Municipal Corporation Disheartened by Desecration of Historic Buildings
City disappointed to find historic mining structures vandalized and tagged with graffiti

Park City, Utah (June 30, 2017) – The Park City Police Department responded to a complaint of graffiti at the Daly Mine ruins in Daly Canyon on Monday, June 20, 2017. Following further inspection, City staff found more than five historic structures had been vandalized with fresh graffiti on both the exterior and interior walls. “It’s disheartening to see such little regard for our history and Park City’s mine sites. These structures are in varying degrees of decline, and it is troubling that people are entering the structures, damaging the materials and, at times, even salvaging wood from the historic structures to build camp fires,” stated Deputy Building Official, Michelle Downard. The owners of the mine sites, as well as the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History, are considering plans to clean up the graffiti. 

The Park City Police Department has increased patrols around these areas in an effort to reduce vandalism and destruction, but City officials ask for your help. The Park City community remains committed to the preservation of its industrial mining ruins, and works hand in hand with other preservation organizations, such as the Park City Historical Society and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History.

Planning Director Bruce Erickson echoed the sentiments of others committed to preserving Park City’s past, saying, “These historic structures are not ours, but belong to the past and the people who built them. We should be safeguarding these structures not only for ourselves, but also to create an understanding for future generations and residents and visitors to Park City. The damage of historic structures and disrespect of the past is frustrating when so many encouraging efforts are being made to preserve these relics. Please help us when you are out on our trails by respecting our history and reporting those who do not.”
